Likud demands urgent Central Elections Committee meeting over alleged foreign interference

Likud representative Ilan Bombach requested an urgent meeting of the Central Elections Committee presidency before results are certified, citing suspicions of foreign interference. Chairman Justice Noam Sohlberg stated elections were conducted properly but investigations continue.

Deputy Chairman of the Central Elections Committee and Likud representative, attorney Ilan Bombach, demanded an urgent convening of the committee's presidency following serious suspicions of foreign interference in the elections. The request was submitted today (Monday) to the committee chairman, Supreme Court Deputy President Judge Noam Sohlberg. Bombach requested that the meeting include Shin Bet head David Zini, before the official approval of the results scheduled for Wednesday. According to him, the presidency members should receive information about the suspicions, the evidence collected, and the progress of the investigation before being required to approve the publication of the results. In the urgent letter, Bombach argued that the severity of the suspicions and the lack of clarity regarding their nature and scope do not allow the presidency and the plenum of the Elections Committee to approve the results "as if nothing had happened." The request was filed following Sohlberg's announcement that serious suspicions had been uncovered regarding funding from foreign sources intended to influence the election campaign and that may have a security aspect. Sohlberg stated on Sunday that the elections were conducted properly and that the results reflect the will of the voters, adding that even if the suspicions are verified, they do not undermine the integrity of the elections. Bombach disagrees with the possibility of approving the results before presenting the information to the presidency.
