The Leuven prosecutor's office has launched an investigation; at this stage, the tragedy is classified as an accident. The mayor of the municipality of Bertem, Joel Vander Elst, described the incident as a "very delicate" matter and urged restraint from premature conclusions. The school attended by the deceased girl's older sister has organized psychological support for students and teachers.
