Between 2021 and 2023, this led to the formation of Rossby waves, which enhanced moisture transport to the continent. The additional moisture fell as snow, delivered by so-called atmospheric rivers. The main increase occurred in East Antarctica. Scientists emphasize that this is a temporary phenomenon: ice losses in West Antarctica continue, and the movement of ice toward the ocean is accelerating.
