Al-Khalidi: No elections without Gaza and Jerusalem

Jamil Al-Khalidi, the regional director of the Central Elections Commission, affirmed that Palestinian elections will not be held without the participation of Gaza and Jerusalem, stressing the need to reorganize the Palestinian political system amid current challenges. His statements came during a workshop on the legislative elections scheduled for November 28, 2026, after a twenty-year hiatus. Al-Khalidi discussed logistical obstacles such as providing ballot boxes and electoral ink, confirming the commission's readiness and reliance on the experience of local elections in Deir al-Balah. He also touched on the need for freedom of movement for voters and candidates, and the commission's efforts to include Palestinians in Egypt. Al-Khalidi explained that the candidacy age was lowered from 28 to 23, and the electoral threshold from 1.5% to 1%, which could expand youth participation. He expressed hope for facilitating the entry of international observers, and emphasized the role of the press. Al-Khalidi expects broad participation and a high number of lists and candidates based on indicators and communications.
