In an interview published over the weekend, Varoufakis questioned whether anyone truly believes Israel would lift a finger against the Turkish Air Force if needed, answering: 'Absolutely not.' According to him, Greece gains nothing from aligning with a country that, he claims, commits genocide, while suffering political damage on the international stage. Varoufakis's remarks, as chairman of the left-wing party MeRA25, reflect a clear anti-Israel ideological stance, and he has been known for years as a sharp critic of Israel's policy toward the Palestinians. In contrast, the Greek government is promoting the 'Achilles Shield' plan, a mega-deal worth 3.035 billion euros, under which Greece will receive advanced Israeli defense systems, including David's Sling, SPYDER, and BARAK MX. The agreement, signed in Tel Aviv on August 31, is the largest defense export deal ever between Israel and Greece. The internal debate in Greece reflects broader tensions: the government sees the alliance with Israel as a central component of its deterrence against Turkey, while Varoufakis and the left argue it provides no real guarantee and carries a political cost.
