5 times more than the previous elections: over 276 petitions placed on Solberg's desk
An unprecedented record in the 2026 elections: over 276 election propaganda petitions have been submitted to the chairman of the Central Elections Committee, Judge Noam Solberg – five times more than in the previous elections. The heavy workload creates prioritization and delays, and the tools available to the committee are not suited to the age of social media.
In the elections for the 26th Knesset, an unprecedented record has been set in the number of petitions submitted to the chairman of the Central Elections Committee, Judge Noam Solberg. So far, over 276 election propaganda petitions have been filed, nearly five times more than in the previous election cycle (58 petitions in the elections for the 21st Knesset). The overload stems from the pace of information flow on social media and the ease of preparing petitions, which sometimes include over 100 publications each. The workload requires constant prioritization, and less urgent petitions are postponed. The enforcement tools available to the chairman are limited and not suited to the digital age – election laws rely on a framework enacted decades ago. Last week, Solberg ruled that Likud must publish a clarification about a billboard campaign in Arabic, done in colors associated with the Yashar party in an attempt to mislead. Additionally, Likud petitioned against Yashar over the distribution of letters resembling IDF draft orders.
