25 years after the 9/11 attacks, New York authorities identified another victim using new technology combining DNA testing and genealogical research. She is an adult woman whose identity had remained a mystery since 2001. Her name was not released at her family's request. This is the second victim identified using this method, known as forensic genetic genealogy. To date, out of 2,753 people killed in the attacks, only 1,655 victims have been identified, meaning about 40% remain unidentified. Alongside the ongoing efforts, the 25th anniversary sparked political controversy in New York: families of the deceased launched a campaign to prevent Mayor Zohran Mamdani from attending the memorial ceremony, claiming his statements and ties to figures who downplayed Islamic terrorism make his presence offensive. The petition has garnered over 1,100 signatures.
