British society has been shocked by the tragic conclusion of the legal proceedings into the death of 12-year-old schoolgirl Mia Shay St. Hiller. The girl died after consuming a milkshake at the Pop Inn Cafe in the Bermondsey area of London. The incident occurred in August 2023. The child had a severe form of hazelnut allergy. CCTV footage showed that the owner, Baris Youssef, blended the drink in a dirty blender that had traces of hazelnut from a previous order. The girl immediately went into anaphylactic shock and lost consciousness. Despite emergency hospitalization, she could not be saved. In January 2025, the cafe owner pleaded guilty to six charges. The court fined him £18,000 and ordered 100 hours of community service. The deceased's parents, together with their lawyer, demanded large-scale reforms in the safety system for food service customers. Regulators promised to introduce new safety standards and launch free training courses.
