Yair Golan promotes an alliance with Ra'am and the Joint List: "We will only act together"
Yair Golan, chairman of The Democrats, is advancing a coordinated political axis with Ra'am and the Joint List, which together would hold 27 seats. The goal: to prevent opposition party leaders from conducting separate negotiations with each faction and leaving The Democrats out of the government. A meeting on the matter is expected to take place soon.
Yair Golan, chairman of The Democrats, has been working in recent days to establish a new political axis that would unite his party with Ra'am and the Joint List. The aim is to ensure that the three factions act as a single bloc in negotiations to form an alternative government, according to sources involved in the talks within the opposition bloc. If the move is completed, the new axis would hold 27 seats: eight for The Democrats, eight for Ra'am, and eleven for the Joint List. According to the sources, Golan fears a scenario in which a unity government is formed and he is left out. Another concern is a "divide and rule" move, where opposition party leaders conduct separate negotiations with each faction. Golan is promoting an understanding that the three factions will join the government or support it from the outside only together. According to the sources, Golan has already raised the idea with Joint List chairman Yosef Jabareen and faction chairman Ahmad Tibi. The initial talks were described as businesslike, and another meeting is expected soon. The move comes after Golan publicly called for forming a government in partnership with the Arab parties. Sources in the bloc assess that such an alliance would make it difficult for Gadi Eisenkot, Naftali Bennett, and Avigdor Lieberman to form a government relying only on some of the factions. However, no binding agreement has been reached yet.
