Hurricane Isaias, a Category 3 storm, is approaching the US coast near the border between Florida and Alabama, with winds of 193 km/h. This is the first hurricane to hit the American coastline in two years; the previous one was Hurricane Milton, which struck Florida on October 9, 2024. Residents in the area are making final preparations: windows are being boarded up, sandbags are being placed, and thousands of National Guard soldiers have been deployed. Several counties have announced mandatory evacuations of certain coastal areas, and double red flags have been raised on beaches. The governors of Florida and Alabama have declared a state of emergency in dozens of counties. The National Hurricane Center has stated that preparations must be completed quickly, as weather conditions are expected to deteriorate rapidly. Expected rainfall amounts are 100 to 200 mm, and in some areas up to 380 mm. The hurricane is expected to weaken upon reaching the coast and downgrade to a tropical storm by Saturday afternoon. Dauphin Island Mayor Jeff Collier said he does not expect significant damage but emphasized the need to prepare for the worst. Isaias is the first hurricane of the 2026 season, and the first time in 75 years that no Atlantic hurricane occurred until the end of September.
