A study by Clalit Health Services' Research Institute and the Myers JDC Brookdale Institute reveals that one in five Israelis have not regained normal functioning three years after the October 7 attacks. The National Mental Health Barometer survey found approximately 20% of the population reported severe impairment in daily functioning due to mental health. Young women aged 18-35 reported the highest rate of continued impairment at 32%, falling to 26% among women over 35, and 19% among men of all ages. Over 60% of participants who displayed significant PTSD symptoms shortly after the attacks continue reporting significant symptoms, suggesting chronic suffering. The study found an unprecedented level of trauma exposure compared to international standards, with around 15% of respondents describing themselves as having experienced the highest level of exposure, compared to approximately 4% following the September 11 attacks in the US. Researchers also found direct links between exposure to disturbing content through media and reports of PTSD, depression, and anxiety, though they noted the study cannot establish causality. Around 33% of the population feel a need to seek mental health treatment, although only half of those people actually sought treatment. Prof. Ran Balicer emphasized the need to expand mental health services and remove barriers to access.
