United Nations: Lack of Accountability for 'Israel' Fuels Its Attacks in Gaza and the West Bank
Ravina Shamdasani, spokesperson for the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, said that the lack of accountability for Israel's attacks in Gaza, despite the ceasefire, fuels the continuation of genocide. She noted that over 70,000 Palestinians have been killed since October 2023, described the humanitarian situation as "appalling," and called for an end to arms supplies and support for Israel.
Ravina Shamdasani, spokesperson for the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, stated that the "chronic lack" of accountability for Israel's ongoing attacks in the Gaza Strip, despite the ceasefire, is a key factor fueling the continuation of genocide. This was said in response to a question about the human rights situation and violations in the besieged Gaza Strip, amid ongoing Israeli attacks since October 2023. Shamdasani explained that the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip and the occupied West Bank has reached "catastrophic levels." She noted that over 70,000 Palestinians have been killed by occupation bullets and rockets since October 2023, in addition to over 1,400 Palestinians killed since the ceasefire was announced in October last year. She described the humanitarian situation as "absolutely appalling, and we saw people dying of hunger, and we saw war crimes and potential crimes against humanity being committed." She added: "We also saw more and more land being confiscated in the West Bank, more Palestinians being killed daily, and mistreatment of Palestinian detainees in detention centers. In every violation, we saw a chronic lack of accountability, which fuels this conflict." She noted a "chronic lack" of accountability for Israel's violations in Palestine even before October 2023, confirming that the situation has worsened since then. The UN spokesperson stressed that the crisis has been exacerbated by the prevention of humanitarian aid entry and increasing deaths from starvation, along with escalating land seizures and violations in the West Bank. Shamdasani emphasized the need to stop supplying Israel with weapons and diplomatic and financial support that contributes to fueling the war, affirming that this is an international legal obligation on all member states.
