Sofia Kaltorp, director of the UN Women office in Geneva, said that about 50,000 women and girls have been killed or seriously injured in the Gaza Strip since October 2023. This came in an assessment of the situation in Gaza, after three years of an ongoing Israeli genocidal war and a suffocating siege, during the weekly press conference of the UN office in Geneva on Friday. Kaltorp stressed that the scale of suffering in Gaza can be measured by what women and girls have experienced. She stated that more than 38,000 of them have lost their lives, while 11,700 have suffered serious injuries causing lifelong disabilities. This number is equivalent to one in every 21 women and girls in Gaza. She pointed out that most of the losses were recorded during the first two years of the Israeli attacks on the Strip, and that women and girls are still being killed and injured despite the ceasefire agreement coming into effect a year ago. She indicated that 277 women and girls have been killed in Gaza since the ceasefire began in October 2025. Kaltorp called for the full implementation of the ceasefire in Gaza, adherence to international law, accountability for those responsible for violations, and ensuring the protection of women and girls.
