U.S. President Donald Trump signed a bill imposing the most severe sanctions against Russia over the war in Ukraine. The document, known as the "Lindsey Graham Act on Imposing Sanctions on Russia and Iran in 2026," authorizes and expands sanctions, tariffs, and bans against Russia, and extends sanctions against Iran. The new package includes sanctions against Russian President Vladimir Putin, oligarchs, banks, energy and defense companies, as well as tankers of the "shadow fleet" used to transport Russian oil. The document allows for tariffs of up to 100% on goods from countries that are the largest buyers of Russian oil and gas, particularly China and India. Tariffs of up to 500% are provided for Russian goods. Sanctions against Iran's energy sector and arms supplies are proposed to be extended for another five years. Trump is given the authority to suspend or cancel the measures provided. Earlier, it was reported that the Trump administration is exploring the possibility of concluding new economic agreements with Russia before the end of the war in Ukraine, as well as Trump's readiness to hold a personal meeting with Putin after a peace agreement is reached.
