Trump envoy meets Sudanese military chief in Egypt in attempt to end devastating war

US envoy Massad Boulos met Sudanese army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan in Egypt over the weekend, as Washington pushes for a political solution to Sudan's devastating civil war. The war between the army and the Rapid Support Forces has displaced over 14 million people and triggered ethnically-driven killings since April 2023.

US President Donald Trump's envoy, Senior Advisor for Arab and African Affairs Massad Boulos, met Sudanese army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan in Egypt over the weekend, in a bid to end Sudan's devastating civil war. Boulos announced the meeting on X/Twitter on Monday, reaffirming US efforts alongside Egyptian and other partners to advance a political solution. The rare meeting came less than two weeks after Washington withheld a visa for al-Burhan ahead of a scheduled UN appearance, a move linked to a US-backed ceasefire proposal that Khartoum has resisted. Sudan's army has been fighting the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces since April 2023, when the two fell out over integrating their forces in a planned transition to civilian rule. The war has displaced more than 14 million people and unleashed waves of ethnically-driven killings. The US State Department said last month that neither the Sudanese Armed Forces nor the RSF represent legitimate governance. Washington has accused the RSF of committing genocide and the army of carrying out war crimes; both have denied abuses.
