i24NEWS commentator Avishai Grinzaig reveals documents according to which Chairman of Agudat Yisrael and former Housing Minister Yitzhak Goldknopf was allegedly subjected to an extortion attempt in the context of a real estate dispute with a rabbi. According to the documents, in 2021 Goldknopf headed a large educational association and fell into a dispute with the rabbi of the Miskolc community in Jerusalem, because for nearly a year he did not pay rent on a property belonging to the association. Goldknopf filed a lawsuit in a private rabbinical court, but the defendant evaded. The court allowed Goldknopf to file a civil lawsuit, but then the defendant dropped a bombshell and wrote a threat: "After the plaintiff realized he could not turn to the court because they did criminal things." The defendant accused Goldknopf of committing criminal offenses through his associations. Goldknopf's lawyer sent a counter-threat. The proceeding was closed and Goldknopf did not file a lawsuit. Goldknopf's son-in-law collected the rent. According to the suspicion, Goldknopf knew he might be subject to extortion, and notified the Tax Authority of his decision to pay retroactive tax on rental income of over one million shekels, just before entering the government in December 2022. Goldknopf denies the allegations and claims the document is forged.
