Amid the wars in Ukraine and Iran, NATO is planning a shift in its defense posture against Russia, including precision strikes deep inside its territory in the event of an invasion. According to a report in the Wall Street Journal, officers and senior officials of the alliance gathered in June for a first-of-its-kind conference on deep strikes, led by NATO's Supreme Allied Commander, General Alexus Grynkiewicz. The plan relies on long-range precision weapons designed to hit targets at distances of 100 miles to thousands of miles from NATO borders, including military bases, supply depots, industrial facilities, and critical infrastructure. The United States is upgrading its Tomahawk missiles and ATACMS rockets, while European allies are trying to close the gap with Storm Shadow and Taurus missiles. The new approach is already being implemented by Ukraine, which uses its domestically produced cruise missiles of the "Flamingo" type to strike rocket fuel plants in Russia. However, there is doubt whether European politicians will approve deep strikes, due to a disconnect between military planning and political decision-makers.
