Nine people, including children, set out on a short sailing trip between the islands of Murilo and Ruo in Micronesia on July 30. The trip, which was supposed to last about an hour, was caught in a storm and the boat drifted far off course. The U.S. Coast Guard conducted an extensive search operation for ten days, with assistance from Navy and Air Force aircraft, but on August 9 the search was called off with no findings. Nearly three months later, on November 1, residents on Fanning Island in Kiribati spotted a drifting boat with five survivors: three adults and two children. They were taken to a local priest for care and given medical checks. Their families in Micronesia made contact, but the survivors have not yet told how they survived. The fate of the other four passengers remains unknown.
