For years, Gunn presented herself as Palestinian, Tunisian, and Black, and was even identified as "Palestinian-American" at an educational event in 2024. Her fellow activists, not her political opponents, confronted her with inconsistencies and led to the exposure. An internal investigation published by the Philadelphia Inquirer revealed that her grandfather was born in Baltimore, not Palestine, and that her relatives outside the US live in Israel. Additionally, Gunn claimed financial hardship and received money from acquaintances, but admitted she has significant personal wealth. Gunn published a video and written apology, confirming: "I lied about my identity and I lied for years. I have no Palestinian or Tunisian heritage." The organizations she was involved with condemned her harshly, calling the act a betrayal of trust, and expelled her from their ranks. The affair sparked a storm on social media, and the nickname "the Palestinian Rachel Dolezal" was attached to Gunn.
