Tensions in the US: Demand to Protect October 7 Ceremonies
The Israeli-American Community (IAC) organization has appealed to the presidents of more than 100 US universities, demanding they ensure student safety at October 7 memorial ceremonies, amid plans by anti-Israel groups to hold protest demonstrations on the anniversary. The organization warns of friction on campuses and emphasizes that this is a day of mourning and remembrance.
The Israeli-American Community (IAC) organization sent letters to the presidents of more than 100 universities in the United States, including all Ivy League institutions, demanding advance preparation for planned protests on the third anniversary of the October 7 massacre. The appeal, made through the organization's SHIELD Center, asks campus administrations to enforce policies against harassment and disruptions and to ensure that memorial ceremonies take place safely. The organization stated that the appeal is not political, but rather aims to protect student rights. The move follows reports of anti-Israeli groups planning provocative protests on October 7 itself, near memorial sites. The director of academic initiatives at IAC, Sagit Sadeh Atia, explained that these protests have become threatening and harassing towards Jewish and Israeli students. The demand is based on a report by the US Commission on Civil Rights, which unanimously determined that antisemitism on campuses constitutes a serious violation of civil rights. Concurrently, the IAC published a guide encouraging students to organize memorial events themselves.
