Tehran in flames: Araghchi made a mistake - and in Iran there are those who want to punish him immediately
Iranian parliament member Hossein Ali Haji Deligani threatened to impeach Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi after an Iranian representative was present in the hall during Trump's tough speech at the UN. The threat reflects the internal dispute in Tehran over managing contacts with the US, against the backdrop of a three-hour meeting between an Iranian delegation and Trump's envoys in New York.
The internal struggle in Tehran over contacts with the US is intensifying: Iranian parliament member Hossein Ali Haji Deligani, deputy chairman of the Majlis oversight committee, threatened today to advance the impeachment of Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. The threat came against the backdrop of an Iranian representative being present in the hall during US President Donald Trump's tough speech at the UN General Assembly. Haji Deligani described sitting in the hall during Trump's remarks as "a source of shame and regret." Trump threatened in his speech that if no agreement is reached, he might "destroy the Islamic Republic," and called for economic pressure on Iran. Meanwhile, Trump confirmed that his envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner held a meeting in New York lasting about three hours with an Iranian delegation that included Araghchi. Conservative elements attacked President Pezeshkian's government for its willingness to conduct negotiations. The threat against Araghchi is not new: as early as early August, Haji Deligani said that a group of parliament members was collecting documents for impeachment. The confrontation reflects a deeper dispute within the regime over the way to end the confrontation with the US.
