Syria announced that the Jordanian army killed ten Syrian civilians in an attack in the south of the country this week, and in response closed the main 'Nasib' border crossing linking Amman to Damascus. The Jordanian army justified the attack as a retaliatory operation for the church attack in eastern Jordan, in which nine people were killed, and claimed that fighter jets struck terrorist sites linked to the perpetrators of the attack. Concurrently with the escalation with Jordan, Syria is strengthening its ties with Iraq: Syrian President Ahmed al-Shara and Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi met in Damascus and discussed security and economic cooperation, including an intention to revive an oil pipeline from northern Iraq to the Mediterranean coast in Syria.
