"Sir with the kippah, in the Ten Commandments it is written 'Thou shalt not murder'": the widow confronted her husband's murderer

Ruti Arnon, widow of attorney Efraim Arnon, who was murdered in 2021 at the entrance to his home in Nesher, confronted David Abuaziz, convicted of murdering her husband, and his defense attorneys at the Haifa District Court. During the sentencing arguments she said "the home that was paradise has become hell," and addressed the defendant: "In the Ten Commandments it is written 'Thou shalt not murder'." His attorney Tal Litan shouted back: "Because of you an innocent man is being convicted."

Five and a half years after the murder of attorney Efraim Arnon at the entrance to his home in Nesher, the sentencing arguments stage was held at the Haifa District Court in the trial of David Abuaziz, 69, of Nesher, convicted of murder under aggravating circumstances, of wounding Ruti Arnon, and of obstruction of justice. Ruti Arnon, his widow, spoke of 48 years of marriage and of the life that was cut short: "For me he is Efraim, 22 years old, my beloved, an armored corps officer." According to her, "the home that was paradise has become hell." She fixed her gaze on the defendant and said: "Sir with the kippah, in the Ten Commandments it is written 'Thou shalt not murder'," and addressed his attorneys: "And to you, the lawyers, it is written there 'Thou shalt not steal'." A loud confrontation erupted in the courtroom as a result; attorney Tal Litan shouted back at her: "It is also written 'Thou shalt not lie'. Because of you an innocent man is being convicted." The prosecution, through attorney Tzachi Namirovsky, requested life imprisonment for the murder, an additional penalty for wounding the widow, and maximum compensation. The defense attorneys Moshe Sochami, Tal Litan and Mai Yosupov argued for Abuaziz's innocence and announced they would appeal to the Supreme Court. Abuaziz himself said: "The conviction does me a very great injustice. It is a death sentence." The murder occurred on March 24, 2021. Abuaziz was arrested two days later. The identity of the second person involved remains unknown. In 1980 Abuaziz was convicted of the murder of Tzion Amar in Nesher and sentenced to life imprisonment.
