The Shin Bet is preparing to secure Yashar party chairman Gadi Eisenkot on election day, after announcing last month that it would not provide him with routine protection. The Shin Bet is preparing to secure Yashar party chairman Gadi Eisenkot on election day, after announcing last month that it would not provide him with routine protection. This was first reported Wednesday evening on Kan News. The Shin Bet is preparing to assign Eisenkot bodyguards from its VIP protection unit only on election day itself, and not on a permanent basis. Last month, the Yashar party announced that the Shin Bet would not protect Eisenkot, "contrary to publications on the matter and the positions of the advisory committee." Conversely, the Shin Bet announced that its chief, David Zini, had approved several measures to create an optimal security response for party leaders, in accordance with a ministerial committee decision. Among other things, intelligence units will provide a monitoring and intelligence escort envelope including threat monitoring and building a threat picture around all party leaders, and the Shin Bet will authorize the carrying of weapons by private security companies that party leaders hire. Additionally, last month the High Court ordered Shin Bet chief David Zini to immediately consider providing security for Democrats party chairman Yair Golan due to the level of threats against him.
