Settlements expand, weapons shrink: the new tension between the IDF and settlers

Against the backdrop of political approval for the establishment of new settlements and the expansion of existing ones in Judea and Samaria, tensions have developed between settlement leaders and the IDF. The settlers claim that alongside the replacement of old weapons with new "Ard" rifles, there is a cut in the quantities of rifles distributed to settlements, harming their ability to defend themselves in extreme scenarios. The IDF rejects the claims.

Against the backdrop of political approval for the establishment of more than a hundred new settlements, about 140 isolated farms, and the expansion of existing settlements in Judea and Samaria, new tensions and sharp confrontations developed today (Sunday) between settlement leaders and the IDF. The settlers claim that alongside a re-equipment process in which old weapons are collected and new "Ard" rifles are granted, there is in practice a cut in the quantities of rifles distributed to settlements. According to them, especially in settlements in the Etzion regional brigade, this policy severely harms the physical ability of civilians to defend themselves in extreme scenarios of large terrorist cell infiltration, in many settlements without perimeter fences, and in a scenario of a raging Palestinian mob storming in a 7.10-style attack. On the other hand, official sources in the Central Command reject the criticism and clarify that rifle distribution is carried out according to operational standards set in advance in coordination with the Defense Ministry, and that in cases where weapons were distributed beyond the standard, a reduction and adjustment to procedures is now being carried out. The residents reject the explanations and emphasize the lesson from October 7, claiming that the IDF expects them to prepare for complex scenarios but leaves them without adequate response on the front line as a "first circle" until forces arrive. Sources in the Central Command admitted that there is a manpower shortage in the sector.
