Ben Hissin, a Canadian-Israeli Jew of Kurdish origin, was released today (Wednesday) from prison in the Kurdish region of northern Iraq after 11 years of imprisonment. Hissin escaped the death penalty after his sentence was commuted following a reconciliation achieved last year with the victim's family. Hissin was imprisoned due to his involvement in a conflict that led to the death of a local man. His release was made possible after funds were raised to facilitate the reconciliation. International efforts for his release were led by attorney Alan Lawy and a team of Haredi businessmen from the United States. Hissin also thanked Eyal Siso, a former senior official at the Foreign Ministry, who assisted in his release. Hissin is expected to arrive in Israel in the coming days.
