Russia claims that the Ukrainian army attacked facilities at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, located in eastern Ukraine and under Russian control, overnight between Monday and Tuesday. According to a Reuters report, the attack was carried out using drones and targeted a laboratory and a radioactive waste processing plant. The CEO of the state-owned energy corporation Rosatom, Alexei Likhachev, reported one fatality at the site but emphasized that there is no radioactive threat from the facility. The plant management reported that Ukrainian shelling in recent weeks has damaged power supply equipment, which is used among other things to maintain cooling of nuclear fuel, and that electricity is now being supplied by emergency generators. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said the attacks are possible due to the lack of response from Western countries, adding that this approach demonstrates the true value of their statements regarding nuclear safety. The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry did not comment. Russia seized the plant, the largest in Europe with six active reactors, in the first weeks of the war in February 2022. The International Atomic Energy Agency is working to secure a ceasefire around the facility.
