Protest in Jerusalem: "Salah al-Din Street" renamed to "Heroes of the War of Revival"

A bereaved father, Eliyahu Liebman, installed new signs on Salah al-Din Street in Jerusalem calling it "Heroes of the War of Revival Street," in protest against commemorating the Muslim commander. MK Avi Maoz appealed to the municipality demanding the move be made official. The municipality stated it has no intention of changing the street's name.

A bereaved father, Eliyahu Liebman, father of Elyakim Liebman who fell in the Nova massacre on Simchat Torah, arrived this morning (Thursday) at Salah al-Din Street in Jerusalem and installed new signs bearing the name "Heroes of the War of Revival Street." The move, 839 years after the conquest of Jerusalem by Saladin, was intended to remove the commemoration of the Muslim conqueror and instead commemorate the fallen of the Swords of Iron War. Liebman, a candidate in the Noam party for Israel, said that whoever commemorates the conqueror admits that the conquest succeeded. Meanwhile, MK Avi Maoz (Noam) sent an official letter to Mayor Moshe Lion demanding that the name change be brought to the municipal naming committee for discussion. Maoz argued that the move would cut off the hopes of Israel's enemies and commemorate Israel's heroes. The Jerusalem Municipality responded that it cherishes the heroes of the War of Revival and works to commemorate them with pride, but has no intention of changing street names in general, and Salah al-Din Street in particular.
