A Palestinian (about 40 years old) from the West Bank was killed late Sunday-Monday after being hit by a truck in the city of Kafr Qasim. The man sustained severe injuries from the collision and was taken to a nearby medical center, where he was pronounced dead from his wounds. Police detained the truck driver, a resident of Kafr Qasim, for questioning, while traffic accident investigators began examining the circumstances of the incident. The incident comes amid a rise in road accident fatalities in the Arab community to 142 since the beginning of the year, an increase of about 8% compared to the same period last year, despite an overall decline in fatalities nationwide. Road accidents in the country claimed 367 victims in the first ten months of this year, a drop of about 7% compared to the same period last year which saw 392 victims. In contrast, the death toll in the Arab community rose by about 8%, reaching 142 victims, compared to 130 in the same period last year. Arabs account for about 38.7% of all road accident fatalities, although they make up only 21% of the total population, according to Israeli data. The statistics include victims from occupied Jerusalem and the occupied Syrian Golan, and highlight the gap in road accident fatality rates between the Arab community and the rest of the population, despite the overall decline in the number of victims.
