Ukraine launched over a thousand drones toward Russia over the weekend (Saturday-Sunday, September 19-20), in an attack of unusual scale. Hundreds of the drones were aimed at the Moscow region. In response, Russia launched a broad wave of attacks against Ukraine. On the night between Sunday and Monday (September 20-21), Russian drones struck the city of Zaporizhzhia in southern Ukraine. According to Ukrainian President Zelensky, residential buildings, a university, and a shopping center were hit, and five people were wounded. Russia simultaneously attacked nine other regions. In the Kharkiv region, a Russian drone hit a residential building, killing a 45-year-old woman and seriously wounding her 13-year-old son. According to the Russian Defense Ministry, air defense systems intercepted 244 Ukrainian drones during the last night. The Ukrainian Air Force announced it intercepted or jammed 148 Russian drones. US President Trump commented on the campaign, saying Russia has lost control of part of its diesel production capacity due to attacks on refineries. Earlier this month, Trump called on Zelensky to stop attacks on Russian oil refineries, arguing they contribute to a global diesel shortage.
