The annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank in Bangkok this week witnessed an atmosphere mixing optimism and concern about the prospects of the global economy. The Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund, Kristalina Georgieva, said on the last day of the meetings, during a press briefing alongside the Saudi Minister of Finance, Mohammed Al-Jadaan, that optimism is due to the resilience of the global economy, the promises offered by artificial intelligence, and the dynamism characterizing Asia. She added that artificial intelligence is also a source of concern, as are inflation, high debt, and climate risks. Throughout the week, the IMF kept warning of rising debt and increasing bond yields, which lead to tighter financial conditions, while central banks should focus on containing inflation through new interest rate hikes. Global energy prices have risen sharply since the outbreak of war in the Middle East in late February.
