Washington Post photographer Heidi Levine underwent surgery on her left index finger today (Saturday) after it was nearly severed in an attack by settlers yesterday in the West Bank. Her daughter, Ashley Milner, said the finger was cut to the bone and a tendon was left exposed. According to the daughter, Levine also suffers from a broken rib, fractures in several vertebrae, and cuts across her body. Levine herself recounted that the attackers, who were armed with bottles and slingshots for throwing stones, kicked her for about ten minutes as she tried to hold onto her cameras and bag. She said the helmet and bulletproof vest she wore, marked "Press," likely prevented more serious injuries. The article does not include the attackers' version or any official response.
