One of Russia's largest oil refineries is ablaze after a night drone attack

Explosions were heard overnight in Russia's Samara region as the Kuibyshev oil refinery, part of Rosneft, caught fire. Preliminary reports indicate the blaze resulted from a strike by Ukraine's Defense Forces. Explosions were also heard in nearby Tolyatti. The refinery has a design capacity of about 7 million tons of oil per year, making it one of the largest in the country. The Kuibyshev refinery is part of Rosneft's Samara refining hub, along with the Syzran and Novokuibyshevsk plants. All three facilities have been targeted by drone attacks multiple times in recent months: the Syzran plant halted operations in May and has yet to return to full capacity; the Novokuibyshevsk refinery was hit in April and August and has been operating at reduced capacity since. The latest attack effectively threatens the entire Samara refining hub. According to Russia's Defense Ministry, 297 Ukrainian drones were intercepted and destroyed over Russian regions overnight. Local authorities have not yet released official data on casualties or the extent of the damage.
