New study finds: Mounjaro weight-loss injection more effective for weight loss than Wegovy
A new study comparing the weight-loss drugs Mounjaro (tirzepatide) by Lilly and Wegovy HD (semaglutide) found that Mounjaro 15 mg led to 4.5% greater weight loss compared to Wegovy HD in adults with obesity. Participants receiving Mounjaro 15 mg were three times more likely to achieve at least 20% weight loss.
A new study comparing the weight-loss drugs Mounjaro (tirzepatide) by Lilly and Wegovy HD (semaglutide) found that Mounjaro is more effective for weight loss. The findings, presented at the annual meeting of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) in Milan, are based on an indirect comparison of data from the SURMOUNT-1 and STEP UP trials. Mounjaro 15 mg showed 4.5% greater weight loss compared to Wegovy HD in adults with obesity. Participants receiving Mounjaro 15 mg were three times more likely to achieve at least 20% weight loss compared to Wegovy HD. The comparison was adjusted for variables such as sex, age, baseline weight, and baseline A1C. Additionally, Mounjaro 10 mg showed an average 3.2% greater weight loss. The study notes that although the comparison is not direct, it provides useful evidence for physicians in treatment decisions. The new analysis adds to findings from the SURMOUNT-5 trial, which was a head-to-head phase 3b trial where Mounjaro demonstrated an average weight loss of 20.2% compared to 13.7% for Wegovy.
