New publication by 'Hamma' center reveals gaps in platform policies towards misogyny

The Hamma center (Arab Center for the Development of Social Media) published a policy brief revealing that 55.2% of abusive posts in Levantine dialects use language that degrades women, but only 21.3% are directed at a woman, and 46.3% of misogynistic posts target men by insulting women in their families, exposing a gap in platform policies.

The Hamma center (Arab Center for the Development of Social Media) published a policy brief titled "Beyond Abuse: How the 'Misogyny' Complex Targets Men in the Levant Online, Excludes Women, and Evades Digital Platform Policies." The brief is based on an analysis of 58,798 abusive posts in Levantine dialects published on Facebook and X from January 1 to April 22, 2026. The results showed that 55.2% of posts use language that degrades women, while only 21.3% of all posts were actually directed at a woman. It also emerged that 46.3% of posts involving misogyny were directed at men, where reference to the mother, sister, or wife is used as a tool to insult the targeted man. The brief reveals a gap in the classification and content moderation systems of digital platforms, as abuse that degrades women with the aim of harming a man does not clearly fall within current classifications of harassment or hate speech.
