NASA Project Manager: "We Have Far Exceeded the Goal"

NASA's Perseverance rover has broken the distance record on Mars, accumulating 45.22 kilometers and surpassing Opportunity. The project manager stated that the original plan included only about 20 kilometers of travel. NASA has approved the first mission extension through the end of 2028.

NASA's Perseverance rover has broken the record for the farthest distance traveled on a celestial body beyond Earth, after accumulating 45.22 kilometers on Mars. The rover surpassed Opportunity, which held the previous record of 45.16 kilometers. Perseverance completed the distance in five and a half years, compared to nearly 15 years for its predecessor. The rover's autonomous navigation system, which allows it to travel up to about 412 meters per Martian day, helped choose the path for more than 90% of the distance covered. NASA project manager Steven Lee said the original plan included only about 20 kilometers of travel, and the team expects the rover to continue increasing the distance. NASA has approved the first mission extension, which will last until around the end of 2028, and the rover continues to explore ancient areas on the rim of Jezero Crater in search of evidence of processes that occurred on Mars.
