Minister Shkli warns: "Israel will cease to be a Zionist state"
Diaspora Affairs Minister Amichai Shkli says that Basic Law: The Knesset prohibits parties that deny Israel's existence as a Jewish and democratic state or support armed struggle against it from running for the Knesset, but according to him, the law has become a "dead letter" under the auspices of a High Court ruling. He warns that a partnership between left-wing leaders and supporters of terrorism will lead to Israel ceasing to be a Zionist state.
Diaspora Affairs Minister Amichai Shkli declares that Basic Law: The Knesset prohibits parties that deny Israel's existence as a Jewish and democratic state, or support armed struggle against it, from running for the Knesset. According to him, this is "the most important datum in this campaign." Shkli claims that in practice, the Basic Law has become a "dead letter" under the auspices of a High Court ruling, attributing this line to Justice Aharon Barak and his "successors" on the Supreme Court. The minister adds a political warning: if left-wing leaders pursue a partnership with "supporters of terrorism," Israel will "de facto" cease to be a Zionist state and become a binational state. He concluded his remarks by stating that "this is the heart of the matter."
