Luxury cruise company suspends operations, leaving hundreds stranded

The luxury cruise company Villa Vie Residences has unexpectedly suspended its operations and ordered approximately 200 passengers to disembark in Cambodia, due to an abnormal surge in fuel costs that made the continuation of the voyage economically unfeasible. Some passengers, who paid hundreds of thousands of dollars and even sold their homes, have been left stranded.

The luxury cruise company Villa Vie Residences has unexpectedly suspended its operations and ordered approximately 200 passengers to disembark from the ship Villa Vie Odyssey while docked in Cambodia. The reason for the dramatic decision is an abnormal and unexpected surge in fuel costs, which rose from $1,800 per cabin per month to $6,000-$8,000 in Asian cruising areas. The company's CEO, Mikael Peterson, attributed the rise in fuel prices to the war in Iran. The passengers, some of whom sold their homes to finance their life on the ship, received short notice and were required to vacate their rooms by 2:00 PM. The company is exploring options for reorganization and capital raising over the next 60 days, but emphasized that no outcome is guaranteed. The cost of living on the ship starts at $119,999 as an initial payment, in addition to monthly payments that can reach up to $5,000.
