She escaped in her pajamas into a crazy flood and began climbing with locals to higher ground. The entire night passed in complete darkness, in pouring rain, with no reception or ability to communicate. Zilberberg said she heard rockslides above her head, and she and her friends were not sure they would survive. They relied on a satellite phone throughout the night. At dawn, she discovered that the entire village had been completely destroyed. The most frightening moment, she said, was crossing the village that had become a raging river on the way to the helicopter landing pad, where a wrong move could have swept her away.
