The Bat Yam municipality in Israel has filed a lawsuit in the Jerusalem District Court against the Islamic Republic of Iran, demanding 250 million shekels in compensation for the human and material damages caused to the city by the Iranian missile attack during the war in June 2025. The lawsuit was initiated by the mayor, Zvika Brot, who previously headed the election campaign for the Likud party, and was prepared by an international team of lawyers led by the organization "Shurat HaDin," headed by attorney Nitsana Darshan-Leitner. The indictment was written in Hebrew and translated into Persian, according to the newspaper "Yedioth Ahronoth." In an unusual step to notify the Iranian side of the lawsuit, Brot and his team went last week to Manhattan in New York, where they handed a copy to the first secretary of the Iranian delegation to the United Nations, in coordination with Israeli government entities, the US administration, and security officials. The preparation for the operation took four months, including gathering information about the movements of Iranian diplomats in New York, preparing identification templates for senior Iranian officials, and mapping their usual travel routes, with the help of local assistants. The team chose to carry out the notification process in a neutral area outside the Iranian mission headquarters, to avoid legal issues related to entering diplomatic mission premises.
