Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps released footage of an autonomous underwater vehicle, a Dive-LD model manufactured by the American company Anduril Industries, which they claim was captured at the entrance to the Strait of Hormuz. According to the Revolutionary Guard Navy, the vehicle is "one of the most advanced smart and unmanned submarines of the US military," equipped with advanced technologies and delivered to the US military in 2025. Iranian media reported it is about 5.8 meters long, weighs nearly three tons, can operate autonomously for up to ten days, reach depths of up to 6,000 meters, and is intended for intelligence gathering, reconnaissance, seabed mapping, and mine detection. The United States confirmed that an American underwater vehicle was lost, but a Pentagon spokesperson said the vehicle "suffered a malfunction more than a day earlier" while surveying the area's waters, and it was an old model that did not collect sensitive information. Anduril also confirmed the loss, emphasizing that vehicle loss is part of operational risk in hazardous environments. Tehran is using the event to highlight its surveillance capabilities, with a Revolutionary Guard spokesperson claiming that "no advanced technology can evade our surveillance layers in the Strait of Hormuz." The Iranian report was published on September 8, against the backdrop of the ongoing conflict between Iran and the United States over military activity and control of the strait. On the same day, Iranian media also reported that Iran's air defense system shot down an American MQ-1 aircraft in the strait area, a claim the United States did not confirm.
