Houthis: Egypt’s decision to give military support to Saudi Arabia is declaration of war

A Houthi official said Tuesday that the Egyptian parliament's decision to authorize military support for Saudi Arabia against the Iran-backed group's attacks was a declaration of war. The comment came as Saudi, Pakistani and Turkish officials visited Tehran for talks with Iranian leaders.

A Houthi official said Tuesday that the Egyptian parliament's decision to authorize military support for Saudi Arabia against the Iran-backed group's attacks was a declaration of war. Mohammed Ali al-Houthi, a member of the Houthis' political bureau, made the comment in a Telegram post reacting to a Monday visit to Tehran by Saudi Defense Minister Khalid bin Salman, Pakistan's army chief General Asim Munir, and Turkey's intelligence chief Ibrahim Kalin. The delegation met with Mohsen Rezaei, head of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. Al-Houthi said it was remarkable that while these people discuss peace, Egypt and its parliament declare support for the defense of Saudi Arabia and in doing so declare war against Yemen. He also said the recent Saudi-Pakistan-Turkey defense pact was a clear act of aggression against Iran. Egypt's parliament voted in a closed session Monday to authorize military support for Saudi Arabia, with at least two-thirds backing the measure. The statement did not specify what kind of support Egypt would provide. The Civil Democratic Movement, a coalition of opposition parties, rejected Egyptian military involvement. The Houthis have escalated attacks on Saudi Arabia since October, killing civilians and forcing Riyadh airport to shut for two weeks.
