The remnants of Tropical Storm "Rachel" slammed into the southwestern United States, causing destruction along the California coast and record rainfall in Nevada. In Long Beach near Los Angeles, powerful waves are spilling over the coastal defenses and into homes. According to a local television channel, the waves destroyed part of a wooden boardwalk that is about a hundred years old. Eight structures have been deemed dangerous, and one house may collapse. In Newport Beach, water flooded the streets, and authorities declared a local state of emergency because of the coincidence of an unusually high tide and powerful ocean swell. On Sunday, October 11, 27.4 mm of precipitation fell at Las Vegas airport — a record for that calendar date, more than three times the usual October norm and more than a quarter of the annual precipitation total. Because of the downpours, local flooding occurred in part of the city; near the Strip, streets turned into rivers on which cars got stuck. The article cites Reuters and local television channels.
