A suspect driving under the influence of drugs yesterday (Tuesday, September 15) hit a police vehicle in Ashkelon. After the collision, he fled the scene while endangering pedestrians and road users, mounted the sidewalk and later tried to destroy evidence related to the incident. Ashkelon station officers began search operations and arrested him within a short time. He was transferred for questioning at the station and is being investigated on suspicion of endangering human life on a roadway, obstructing investigative proceedings and destroying evidence, driving under the influence of drugs and additional traffic offenses. The court extended his detention until September 22 for the continuation of the investigation. Ashkelon station commander, Chief Superintendent Eldad Elashiv, stated that this is a serious incident in which the lives of road users were endangered, and praised the swift and professional action of the station's officers. He emphasized that the police will continue to operate with zero tolerance against drivers who endanger the public.
