The wing includes 12 cells for 50 inmates, along with observation cells, a club, and an education classroom. The move aims to expand women's incarceration, which until now was concentrated in Neve Tirza, the only prison in Israel designated exclusively for women.
The Israel Prison Service inaugurated a new incarceration wing for female criminal inmates at Gevaon Prison in Ramla, in the presence of Commissioner Kobi Yaakobi and senior officials. This is a first-of-its-kind step outside Neve Tirza Prison, which until now was the only prison in Israel designated exclusively for women. The new wing includes 12 cells with a standard capacity of 50 places, along with observation cells, a club, and an education classroom. The IPS noted that the move aims to strengthen correctional governance, expand incarceration capabilities, and improve the response to the female inmate population. Neve Tirza has been operating since 1968 in Ramla at maximum security level. Gevaon Prison was established in 2004 amid a shortage of incarceration spaces, and holds detainees and criminal inmates with a remaining sentence of up to five years, along with foreigners awaiting deportation.
