El Al flight LY017, which departed Tuesday evening from Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv to Miami, was forced to return to Israel due to a technical malfunction detected by the crew approximately six hours after takeoff, when the aircraft was already over the ocean. Passengers spent a total of more than ten hours in the air and on board, landing back at the same airport. Upon return, passengers were offered two options: an alternative flight to Miami departing the same day, or a full refund of the ticket price. Additionally, El Al announced compensation beyond standard conditions. Passengers could choose a cash payment or a voucher. The compensation scheme: economy class passengers will receive $1,500, premium economy $2,000, and business class $2,500.
