The move may pave his way to the position of Prime Minister, if his party, the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS), and its allies form the next government. Hundreds of his supporters gathered outside the presidential building in Belgrade ahead of his announcement. Vučić told the crowd: "This is my last evening in this building. I have served you and my homeland, Serbia, with loyalty. I am proud of what we have done together." Serbian media reported thousands gathered outside the building. Presidential elections are expected to take place within 90 days, with the first round expected by the end of December. The resignation comes in the midst of the early parliamentary election campaign, after Vučić signed on September 9 to dissolve parliament and advance the elections to October 25. His party's main rivals are the student movement "Students Win" and the pro-Western party alliance "European Serbia."
