Doctor without a mask infected a woman in labor with a dangerous bacterium, and she had to have her uterus removed

A court ordered Sheba Medical Center to pay approximately 9 million shekels to a woman who contracted streptococcus after childbirth and lost her uterus. The doctor delivered the baby without a mask, and the infection was not recognized upon discharge. Genetic analysis confirmed the infection came from the doctor.

The Central District Court in Lod ordered Sheba Medical Center to pay approximately 9 million shekels to a woman who contracted a streptococcal infection after giving birth to twins and lost her uterus. The court found double negligence: the doctor who delivered the baby was in the operating room without a mask, and signs of infection were not recognized upon discharge. The birth took place on December 6, 2015. Genetic analysis confirmed that the bacterial strain in the doctor matched the patient's strain. The woman underwent lengthy rehabilitation and developed PTSD, depression, and fibromyalgia, with a disability rating of 64%. Sheba Medical Center stated its intention to appeal the decision, citing a lack of proven connection between the cases.
