After a series of femicides, including those of immigrants Yana Zykova and Yanina Rusinova, the Israeli Ministry of Social Welfare clarified the procedure for determining the fate of children left without a mother and with a father in prison. Hava Levi, the chief social worker for juvenile law, explains that when a report of an incident is received, the police call municipal social workers who assess the situation, find out about the children and relatives. Children may be transferred to relatives or, if that is not possible, to emergency foster care institutions. Within 96 hours to 7 days, a court hearing must be organized to decide their future. Levi emphasizes that the decision is always made in the best interest of the child and may change over time.
