Connecticut resident gets 7 years for attempting to join ISIS

A federal court in Connecticut sentenced 29-year-old Ahmed Khalil Alshazly to 92 months in prison and lifetime supervised release for attempting to provide material support to ISIS and join the organization in Syria. He was arrested in December 2019 while trying to reach Turkey, pleaded guilty in 2022. In August 2025, prison authorities found plans for a riot in his cell.

A federal court in Connecticut sentenced 29-year-old Ahmed Khalil Alshazly to 92 months (7 years and 8 months) in prison followed by lifetime supervised release. Alshazly was found guilty of attempting to provide material support to the terrorist organization Islamic State (ISIS) and attempting to join its ranks in Syria. According to court documents, he pledged allegiance to ISIS. Security forces arrested him in December 2019 as he tried to reach Turkey, from where he planned to travel to Syria. Alshazly pleaded guilty in 2022. In August 2025, while already in custody, prison guards discovered handwritten plans for organizing a riot in the detention facility in his cell. The sentence includes both a prison term and a lengthy period of supervision after release.
